Emterra Plays Santa’s Elves in Time for Christmas

WINNIPEG, MB (December 17, 2012) – A snowy Monday morning, December 17, didn’t deter staff from Emterra Environmental in Winnipeg as they volunteered to deliver 280 reconditioned bicycles to youth organizations around the city.

Decked out with Santa hats and driving trucks sporting reindeer antlers, the Emterra field supervisors joined forces with Winnipeg’s The Wrench, to see that less fortunate kids all over the city got bicycles this Christmas.

The Wrench is an organization of volunteers that, under the leadership of Executive Director Pat Krawec, hold an annual 24-hour marathon to recondition bicycles that have been discarded in landfill. This year 80 volunteer mechanics showed up to help. The project is called Cycle of Giving.

Once the bikes were ready to go, it was Emterra’s job to make sure they got to the various organizations that would distribute them to kids.

“The amazing thing about this project is that the volunteers who are part of The Wrench project take about two tonnes of discarded bicycles out of the landfill and fix them up for kids. This is exactly the kind of project that Emterra is proud to be a part of because it aligns perfectly with our philosophy of striving to achieve Zero Waste,” said Kristin Houle, commercial recycling specialist at the Winnipeg Emterra office, who organized Emterra’s part.
